San Diego is enriched by a vibrant Spanish-Mexican culture and heritage beautifully reflected throughout the city. Discovered by the Spanish in 1542, San Diego hosted the first European settlers on the West coast. San Diego (and much of California) was land sought after for many years, passing from Spanish to Mexican rule in 1821. The American government took final claim in 1850, making California the 31st state to join the country.
